Garin Jenkins to be the Ambassador as £500,000 European Rugby Festival comes to North Wales
Garin Jenkins, ex Swansea, Wales and British & Irish Lions has welcomed the invitation to become the Festival Ambassador for the 10th European Golden Oldies Rugby Festival at Caernarfon, Gwynedd in June 2010.
“Having had the privelege to represent my Village and Country on many of the Great world rugby stages, I am honoured to be the ambassdor for the rugby fesival in 2010, a gathering of the brave the beautiful and the Blessed” said Garin on accepting the role as Ambassador.
Y GOGs (Geriatrics o Gymru) are based at Clwb Rygbi Caernarfon Rugby Club North Wales and are the only Golden Oldies team from Wales to have represented Wales Internationally. Chairman, Emrys Jones, said “We were very pleased that this prestigious event will be coming to Caernarfon and this is the first time that Wales has welcomed the festival. We expect to welcome over 1,000 visitors to Caernarfon in June 2010. Our team attended the ninth festival in Madeira with over 40 teams from 16 European countries taking part. At present there are 36 teams registered to attend with over 1,100 participants”. “Figures show that between £500.000 and £600.000 will be ploughed into the local economy during the 4 days of the Festival”.
These days Golden Oldies rugby provides a great opportunity for the over 35s of both sexes to keep fit and enjoy physical exercise in a sporting and light hearted manner. Mr. Jones added, “As part of the celebration of sport and cultural exchange, the Rugby Club at Caernarfon will also hosting a rugby Tournament on the Saturday of the Festival. The town of Caernarfon will receive a major boost to its local economy during and after the festival. With just over a year to go, 29 teams from the following nations have already registered for the 2010 Festival : Wales, England, Scotland, Ireland, Lithuania, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, Russia, Israel, Italy, Portugal and Argentina.
