These are exciting times for sport in the UK – The Olympic Games for London in 2012, The Commonwealth Games for Glasgow in 2014 the World Golden Oldies Rugby Festival in Edinburgh 2008 and now Caernarfon has been successful in its bid to host the 10th European Golden Oldies Rugby Festival in 2010.
What makes this event special?
It is one of the major global Golden Oldies Rugby Festivals with teams from all parts of the continent taking part.
It’s a one off event, it’s the tenth Festival in the series, it’s the first time it’s been held outside of a major European City and it’s the first time for the Festival to be held in Wales. It’s also part sporting event, part cultural exchange and a celebration of sport, an affirmation that sport brings people together no matter what their background, no matter what their age.
Other Venues have included Aberdeen, Split, Benidorm /Alicante, Zurich and Madeira will host the Festival in 2008.
Teams travelling from all over Europe will mean that between 500 to 1000 people, players and supporters will visit Caernarfon over the four days of the festival. There will also be many British teams involved.
The 10th bi-annual festival will be held on 10-13th of June, 2010 and will be hosted by Y GOGs at Clwb Rygbi Caernarfon (R.F.C.) and the games will be played on the Club’s fields on Y Morfa and the Council owned fields on the Aberforeshore will also be used.
In short, the programme of the Festival is as follows:
Thursday – Arrival and evening welcome party,
Friday and Sunday - Two days of rugby matches,
Saturday - Optional tours of local attractions and various entertainments in the evening at local bars and hostelries in the town.
Sunday - The Farwell Dinner.
